Is the Trip Worth It? Shopping Trip Savings Calculator
Compare nearby and distant purchase prices, then subtract extra transport, tolls, parking, and time value to find real savings and break-even distance, price, or quantity.
Formula and assumptions
Read cash savings separately from the economic result including time. Time value is optional. Near break-even, small measurement errors can reverse the decision, so review the break-even limits too.
Why the result can vary
Observed efficiency, traffic, parking, tolls, quantity, return risk, quality differences, and the personal value assigned to time all change real savings.
Example
Drive to a warehouse store
Inputs: 120,000 nearby, 95,000 farther away, 35 extra km and 50 extra minutes, fuel, tolls, and optional time value
Outcome: Subtract added travel and time from the 25,000 price discount to show final savings or loss and a break-even distance.
Cautions
- Presets are editable demonstrations, not current fuel, charging, taxi, or product prices.
- Consider unentered differences such as quality, warranty, return cost, safety, and travel fatigue before deciding.

Frequently asked questions
Should distance be the full round trip?
Quick mode expects distance added beyond the nearby choice. If the nearby option needs no trip and this purchase causes the whole journey, the full round trip is the extra distance.
Must I put a price on my time?
No. Choose not to include it for a cash-only result. When included, cash savings and the time-inclusive result remain separate.
Does the calculator invent vehicle depreciation?
No. If desired, enter your own per-kilometer maintenance amount for tires and consumables.
