How to use Travel Money Lab
- 1. Before or during your trip
Before departure, enter the whole budget including prepaid transport and lodging. During travel, start with the money actually available now.
- 2. Enter days and travelers
Use total trip days before departure, or remaining days including today during travel. Enter budget and cost amounts as whole-group totals.
- 3. Known costs and emergency fund
Enter transport and lodging costs, or mark them unknown or not needed. Additional costs and an emergency fund are optional. During travel, include only future unpaid costs.
- 4. Check the daily allowance
See daily amounts for the group and each traveler. When costs are unknown, the result is an upper limit before those costs. If the budget falls short, check the shortfall first.
How the calculation works
Before your trip, enter the whole budget including transport and lodging already paid for. During your trip, enter the money actually left and do not deduct past payments again. If costs are unpriced, the result is an upper limit before those costs, not a confirmed daily amount to spend.
Uncertainty
Unpriced costs, additional bookings, cancellation fees and new expenses can change the money left. This calculator divides amounts you enter; it does not look up airfares, hotel prices or exchange rates.
Checks before booking
- When unpriced costs remain, the displayed allowance is an upper limit before those costs.
- Do not enter transport or lodging charges twice when they are included in a booking.
- Keep all amounts in one currency. Airfares and exchange rates are not retrieved or updated automatically.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a departure country or destination city?
Not for the basic daily allowance. Enter available money, days, travelers and known costs. Open the optional detailed planner only when you want to organize costs by city or itinerary.
What if I do not know the flight or hotel price yet?
Leave the cost unknown. Unknown does not mean free: the result identifies costs that have not been deducted. Entering their prices reduces the daily allowance. Select not needed only when that cost genuinely does not apply.
Should I include flights and hotels already paid for?
Before departure, yes: the whole-trip budget includes past payments, so enter those costs too. During travel, start from current money left and enter only future unpaid costs, without deducting past payments again.
Are the amounts per person or for the whole group?
Enter the budget and transport, lodging and other costs as whole-group totals. Results show both the group's daily allowance and the amount per person per day.
Can I mix amounts in different currencies?
Use the single selected currency for every amount in the basic calculation. It has no live exchange rates or automatic conversion, so convert foreign amounts using the rate you expect to pay before entering them.
What happens to drafts and plans saved in the previous planner?
Basic before-trip and during-trip drafts are stored separately in this browser. Existing detailed plans remain available in the expandable detailed planner. Clearing browser data can remove stored inputs and plans.
Can I also calculate how many days my budget can cover?
Yes. Choose the travel-days calculator and enter the total budget, fixed costs and daily spending to work backward to possible days. If daily spending is unknown, first calculate an allowance from the trip length you want.
