How to use Travel Money Lab

  1. 1. Your situation and route

Before departure, enter an origin, destination and round trip. While abroad, enter your current country and city plus the one-way return country and city.

  2. 2. Cities and real prices

Countries and cities accept free text. Destinations without a regional preset never borrow another country's prices, so enter verified lodging, food and transport amounts.

  3. 3. Payments, budget and actual spending

Mark paid items, review money still needed, cash, cards and reserve, then fit the plan to your budget or start tracking actual spending.

How the calculation works

Start with the typical amount and keep the low and high bands in view. Paid items remain part of total trip cost but leave the amount still needed. Cash, card and emergency amounts are separate views of the same plan, not extra duplicated costs.

The full planner adds included costs across low, typical and high scenarios, then subtracts paid items to find money still needed. The reverse-days tool calculates (total budget − fixed costs) ÷ (travelers × daily variable spend), then shows a reserve-protected whole-day plan and a ±20% daily-spend range.

Uncertainty

Regional presets and style multipliers are planning assumptions, not booking quotes. Destinations without a preset require verified manual amounts. Airfare, lodging, transit, events, peak demand, card and exchange fees, lodging tax, and exchange rates vary by date and seller.

Checks before booking

  • Regional preset bands and style multipliers are editable planning assumptions, not market statistics or booking guarantees.
  • The ECB rate is informational and not recommended for transactions. Check the actual provider rate and fees.
  • Check whether departure, return or lodging taxes are already included in a ticket or booking to avoid double counting.
  • This tool does not determine entry rules, visas, insurance suitability, customs declarations, or travel safety.

Official references and optional preset basis

The calculator works with any country or city. These official sources only support exchange-rate context and the optional Japan preset; city planning bands are not official price lists.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate a country or city outside Japan?

Yes. Countries and cities accept free text. A destination without a regional preset never borrows another country's prices, so enter verified airfare, lodging, transit and food amounts yourself.

Can I calculate how many days my total travel budget can cover?

Yes. Choose ‘How many days can this budget cover?’ and enter the total budget, fixed costs such as flights and insurance, travelers, and daily spend per person. The result protects an emergency reserve and shows a daily-spend range.

Does the default exchange rate include card or exchange fees?

No. It starts from an ECB EUR cross-rate dated August 26, 2026 and is informational only. Enter the latest rate and your card or exchange fees.
