Formula and assumptions

Total hours are actual footage duration. Calendar days are retention at the entered daily schedule; under loop recording, this approximates the overwrite interval for the oldest footage.

Convert usable bytes to bits and divide by (video Mbps + audio Mbps) × streams. Convert seconds to hours; for part-day recording, divide footage hours by daily recording hours for calendar days.

Why the result can vary

Variable bitrate, scene motion, codec settings, container overhead, metadata, snapshots, and decimal-versus-binary storage displays change actual capacity.

  • The calculator does not invent bitrate from a compression-preset name.

Frequently asked questions

Are Mbps and MB/s the same?

No. Lowercase b is bits and uppercase B is bytes; one byte is eight bits. This input is Mbps.

Do two cameras double storage time?

The opposite. Two equal-bitrate streams double total data rate and roughly halve retention.

How do I enter motion-only recording?

Estimate the average hours actually recorded each day. Use a wider range if motion frequency changes substantially.
